CORBETT CHANGES VOTE ON UNPOPULAR BUDGET BILLLt. Governor John Garamendi, in his run for Ellen Tauscher's vacated congressional seat, sidestepped a potentially uncomfortable vote during last week's passing of a new budget in Sacramento. Count state Sen. Ellen Corbett as his new BFF ("best friends forever" for those uncool, OMG!).
After a vote on the $1 billion take from the Highway Users Tax Account (HUTA) was knotted at 20. Some lawmakers began clamoring for Garamendi, also the President of the Senate and possible tie-breaker to cast a yes vote, but casting a vote on the deeply unpopular grab of local funds would give his Democratic opponent for the 10th district Sen. Mark DeSaulnier (D-Concord), who voted no on the bill, a nice campaign talking point.
Don't call Garamendi just yet! In came Corbett, who initially planned to vote no, to switch sides and carry the bill to Assembly. Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger, though, says he will likely veto such a proposal possibly making the whole episode a non-story by the special election Sept. 1.
